...ATTACKED by Washoe County Social Services!!!

Washoe County Social Services Moves in to Seize Karen Lekas' Daughter Lexus, based on trumped up allegations that Lexus had contact with her Step father, David Sharra.

County had dropped charges of sexual misconduct against Sharra in regards to inappropriate touching of the child.

County claimed that since Sharra no longer had contact with the child, is was appropriate to drop the charges rather than prosecute an alleged sex offender.

Shara and Karen Lekas deny those charges.

Charges came at same time that County had charges against Lekas for giving Sharra's daughter alchohol, which the parents both deny, especially since Lekas wasn't home and has an alibi.

Ignorance of Washoe County displayed by today's heinous act of kidjacking in one case they already lost for no evidence (Sharra's), another case in which they're losing and the D.A. had to remove himself from due to inappropriate conduct by one of his investigators.

Washoe County obviously getting nervous that they're about to lose one child representing a "Cash Cow," but now three children in the family alleging that they are being coached to say what the County wants them to say, even if they are to bear False Witness against their own Parents.

Today, as Washoe County Social Services attempted to take Karen Lekas' daughter Lexus, the child ran back into her Mother's room, crawled and roll herself into a ball on her mother's bed, crying, then spoke out to her Mother that "they hound me to say what they want me to say," and on the telephone, an Attorney was listening.

The child had to be pried from her Mother's arms by Washoe County Social Services ~ Lexus did not want to go!

We'll have more on this story soon, occurring at a time when Karen Lekas' son wants to come home, is with the Mother at this time, has strangely enough NOT been taken from the Mother, nor has any other child, and is there in support of her.

Washoe County is obviously losing their cases and being exposed for their considerable wrong-doing. Today's Panic Attack by the County is living Proof that, if they had a legitimate leg to stand on in the first place, they would have prosecuted their cases against Sharra and Lekas long ago!

Instead, Washoe County now exposes itself and the Bad Light of Public Opinion is upon them ~ and they know it ~ and so too, does the Attorney representing Karen Lekas, one Ken Stover.

Can the County afford the Lawsuits that are coming for Civil Rights, Childrens' Rights and Human Rights violations?

No more than they can stand to lose the nearly 1,000 cash cows represented by children kidjacked and taken by Washoe County into its ill-begotten Social Services System.

Lexus today becomes a symbol of all the wrongs done by Washoe County and its Social Services system to others. She is frightened, will need therapy after being "confiscated" like chattel from her parents, and emotionally abused by Washoe County Social Service workers!

She clung to her Mother and would not let go!

And as you've seen by Karen's letters to Emily Smith and Lance White, Stetson has stated he wants to come home, has wanted to for some time, didn't think he had a say in the matter, and has been coached by Washoe County Social Services into saying what they want him to say in attacks upon his Mother and Step Father, whom are guilty of no wrong.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Gestapo, and her it lives in Goosestepping Glory, in Washoe County...

Notes from a Fight Against Tyrants and their Tyranny

Notes in the fight against corruption in Reno, Washoe County and the State of Nevada:

Note 1: Now, according to Police Chief Poehlman, the Reno P.D. Officer conducted the arrest to facilitate Airport personnel. This was not the case. The personnel were solely RARA's. No AAWC personnel were involved in the arrest.

Note 2: Another issue, already pointed out, but segregated to this note column here: I hadn't been to the Airport prior to the Notice to Exclude arriving, therefore, I had not "returned" to the Airport.

Note 3: As I mentioned, the Citizen's Arrest was not conducted properly. Well, neither was the first one of September 14, 2004. In that arrest, Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson failed to read me my Miranda Rights before, during and after the arrest. The remainder of their failures, which were evident in the second arrest, will remain proprietary for now, in order to prepare these subsequent faulty "Citizen's Arrest" issues for Court.

Note 4: Standards of Conduct, Standards of Government Conduct and Standards of Business conduct all agree and are founded on two essential points:

A. One does not do that which is wrong.
B. One does not give the appearance of doing that which is wrong.

Note 5: Conflict of Interest is wrong and violates Standards of Conduct.

Note 6: To reiterate, if Stead Airport were truly in the City of Reno, which is actually 8 miles away, excpet that the City has been annexing lands of other communities right up to the doorstep (Gates) of Stead Airport, then why would Reno P.D., as a Public Service, charge the Airport for "Law Enforcement Services." Simple answer: the Airport is not in the City of Reno as it has not been annexed, and by State Law, as established by no less than State Senator William J. "The Kingpin" Raggio, was taken over from the City of Reno, which sued, lost the lawsuit, and had to forfeit both Cannon International Airport (a.k.a. Reno-Tahoe International) and Stead Airport, Nevada, to the Airport Authority of Washoe County (AAWC).The AAWC has no business hiring Reno P.D. to Police Airport Land under their responsibility. They possess an Airport Police whom are required to monitor Stead Airport, but don't. The Airport Police don't even have a base of operations at Reno-Stead Airport.

Note 7: Once again, RARA didn't have their event waiver publicized on their website.

Note 8: Once again, Jones Vargas failed to inform this Editor of the boundaries involving the exclusion area, or the area from which I was excluded.

Note 9: Once again, RARA personnel waived both my driver and myself through.

Note 10: Once again, RARA involved a "Police Official" in conducting the arrest, beyond the Officer called in to complete the actual arrest and delivery to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.

Note 11: If the Washoe County Sheriff doesn't have control over the Stead Airport facility and lands, then how is it that a non-County entity does, i.e., the Reno P.D.?

Note 12: The City of Reno has a financial Conflict of Interest in that it earns $65 million annually in tourism from the Reno Air Race event.

Note 13: The Airport Authority of Washoe County (AAWC) and Washoe County itself have a Conflict of interest in that the AAWC has personnel assigned to and in charge of RARA, also benefit from tourism revenue, as does the County, and are allowing Michael J. Houghton full control of running Stead Airport, Nevada.

Note 14: The AAWC has given the RARA "Primary Tenant Status." This is not allowed by Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) nor by FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) Grant Funding Rules, Terms, Conditions and Procedures.

Note 15: The terms and conditions of the contracts between the AAWC and RARA, and the AAWC and the Federal Government, prohibit Discrimination.

Note 16: The terms and conditions of the contracts between the AAWC and RARA, and the AAWC and the Federal Government, prohibit criminal misconduct in the form of Tax Fraud, Land Fraud and Major Fraud directed against the Government.

Note 17: The terms and conditions of of the contracts between the AAWC and RARA, and the AAWC and the Federal Government, must contain Separability/Severability clauses, in which Federal Law has precedence over the terms and conditions of the contracts, or absent these clauses, the contacts are null and void. If present, only those portions of the contracts in violation of the Law are stricken while the remainder of the contracts remain in effect.

Reno P.D. indicates it has a contract with an unknown entity to provide "Law Enforcement Services" on Stead Airport, Nevada, in exchange for a land lease upon which a hangar owned by Reno P.D. is sitting.

Chief cites Stead Airport as being "in the City of Reno," however, SSNS is informed that the airport is not annexed by the City of Reno.

If the Airport were actually in the City of Reno, no lease arrangement would be necessary and City Police services would provided without need for contract.

Stead Airport is controlled by Washoe County and should therefore be Policed by Airport Police, specially trained for Aviation Security issues, i.e., Anti-terrorisim; security of aircraft; Federal issues related to Airport Security; Federal Aviation Regulations; Hijacking; Bomb Threats related to Aviation Facilities, Fueling Points and Aircraft; etc.

Thus, SSNS contention is that City Police have hired themselves out to AAWC/RARA as a "Private Security Force."

As "lease for services" arrangement exists, then so too, does "Conflict of Interest" in that, to gain lease, Reno P.D. must "do what they are told" (Editor's contention) and cannot refuse orders to arrest.

As Reno P.D. indicates in the employ of the AAWC and RARA under this contract, and not an independent arm of the City...

...Reno P.D. is therefore in the employ of organized crime, based on our documentation, evidence, testimony and this admission by the Chief of the Reno P.D., meaning:

1) We have confirmation that Reno P.D. has a Conflict of Interest with organized crime interests ("The Mob") as reflected by the criminal acts and operations of the thugs at the Reno Air Racing Association and the Airport Authority of Washoe County, the facades behind which they are hiding while perpetrating Major Fraud.

The exchange is below and provided a very few, candid, honest answers from the Police Chief for the City of Reno, which are refreshing in Reno Government in this day and age.

There was no dishonesty, but it's rather easy to conclude that the Police Chief of the City of Nevada was holding back in his first reply, and is now holding back completely in his second reply.

By the tone of my questions, most of you will be able to see where else I'm heading with this line of questioning. "Discovery" preparations will begin later today after I recover from some scheduled appointments at the V.A. Medical Center in just a few hours.

The FBI complaint will follow immediately for Civil Rights Violations by the Reno P.D., the City Attorneys Office, the City of Reno, the AAWC, RARA and the RARF, among others.

There's more to come ~ we still don't know if this was a Citizen's Arrest or an arrest by a Reno P.D. controlled by Organized Crime interests in the White Collar Community (Corporate, Networked, Bought and Paid For...) ~ and we still don't have answers to our questions from a Reno P.D. that is still an "Officer of the Courts" that by all indications, admits working for "The Mob."

Dear Chief Poehlman:

I need to know why the Reno P.D. are being utilized to Police Stead Airport, Nevada, which is a county facility, not part of the annexation of the local Stead area by the City of Reno, and supposedly under the protection of the Federal Government and Washoe County, via Airport Police, TSA and Homeland Security.

As background to this issue: I was arrested on June 19, 2009, by Reno P.D. as a "Citizen's Arrest" complaint filed by the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA). I am a Journalist with business on that airport,which is a Public Airport, and a First Amendment Right to monitor the activities of RARA, which is a 503 Non-profit whose books, events and activities, all correspond to Public Record, which must be presented on demand.

I was arrested under the same trumped up charges in September, 2004.

I am preparing Federal charges against the RARA at this time, including for Major Fraud directed against the United States government, along with corresponding charges against a "retired" Reno Deputy Police Chief and an instructor from the State Police Academy, for aiding and abetting them. Lawsuits will likely be expanded to the City of Reno and the City Attorney's Office, along with (against) the Municipal Court.

At no time during either arrest were Airport Authority personnel present nor do they appear to have been consulted.

I do not believe that Reno P.D. should be involved in arresting people on a Federally-protected airfield. There is no restraining order on me, only a "Notice to Exclude" without grounds for the exclusion, meaning, discrimination. And everyone pretty much knows why they wish to discriminate against me:

My reporting against their criminal activities, which include fraud, land fraud, sexual harassment, Air Safety violations, Embezzlement, use of thugs, conspiracy, Racketeering, attempted murder and other ridiculous behavior, is well documented. Both myself and the person I was with had our safety endangered when a RARA Security vehicle blocked our path from leaving, though your officer was in plain sight and was going to pull us over anyway, according to the Officer.

I'd like to know how they (Michael J. Houghton and RARA) have the ability to bypass Federal Law Enforcement and Airport Security procedures to utilize Reno P.D. for false arrest, malicious prosecution and fraudulent conviction, in violation of other Civil Rights which I amsure you are well aware of.

I have no complaint against the Office that arrested me. This is a managment issue as far as I am concerned. Especially where Law Enforcement have Conflicts of Interest in the running of what is supposed to be a local charity and public event.

Similar copies of this message are being sent to the FAA, Homeland Security and TSA, along with a formal complaint going to the Secretary of Defense, the Department of Transportation and President Obama. A preliminary complaint has already been sent to the Department of Defense and the President.

Here is what I know. On June 15 it was reported that you were admonished to stay off the airport property. On June 19 you were alleged to have returned and were arrested by our officer for misdemeanor Trespass in facilitation of a citizens arrest by airport personnel. Our case 09-20386.

The Stead airport is in the City of Reno and the Reno Police Department has a contract for law enforcement service in lieu of lease costs for the ground under an airport hangar that the Reno Police Department owns. (Emphasis Added by Editor)

Any access issues you have need to be taken up with the Reno/TahoeAirport Authority.

Dear Chief Poehlman:

This was a very informative answer.

I would appreciate some additional information regarding the contract you have and the land you describe as being under a hangar. Is this land merely with a hangar on top of it, or is there a facility beneath the hangar. That is one point that is not clear to me.

Another point is, specifically which hangar are you talking about and with whom is your lease/contract binding?

Secondly, I would like to have FOIA access to the terms and conditions of the contract. If you feel Discovery as part of the litigation I will have in this matter is more appropriate, or access via subpoena, please let me know. Additionally, were you or your Officer presented with a copy of the contract between RARA and the AAWC, so that either of you would know at the time whether or not these "contract rights" they claim in the Notice to Exclude actually exist or not?

If not, have you been presented with a copy since and if so, on what date was it presented subsequent to my arrest?

Though the Stead Airport may or may not be in the City of Reno, it is controlled by the AAWC of Washoe County, the State of Nevada, along with the FAA, with the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and TSA, having interests in what goes on in regards to its Security and Grounds.

You indicate that your Officer conducted the arrest. That is also slightly vague. I was informed by the Officer that this was a Citizen's Arrest, however, the issues that make up a Citizen's Arrest were not present at the arrest itself. There are special procedures by which a Citizen's Arrest is conducted. Those were also absent at my first arrest in September, 2004.

All of these issues are to be challenged in a Federal Court.

Therefore, I need confirmation one way or the other ~ was this a Citizen's Arrest, or was this an arrest initiated by Reno P.D.? The Officer indicated that officials of RARA wanted me arrested and again, that this was a "Citizen's Arrest." I think we both need clarification on that issue.

In regards to issues beyond the terms and conditions of your lease, I need to know the period of time this contract has been in effect and furthermore, does your contract recognize the U.S. Federal Government's Laws and Anti-discrimination measures in the contract.

Also, is there a Severability and/or Severability clause to the contract?

If possible, a copy of the contract would be appreciated. Also, I was initially refused the Police Reports from the arrest, to include Statements by those making the arrests, due to the issue raised by your records section that "the case had not been transferred to the City Attorney's Office." The case has not been transferred, however, I have only three pages of the Report from the City Attorney and witness/victim's statements are missing, and no formal statement was taken from my witness who observed the arrest. I would therefore like a complete copy of the Arrest Report, Witness and Victim's statements, including that of the Officer.

In regards to the "Notice to Exclude," that document is deficient and will be addressed in Federal Court as such, in that there are no grounds for the exclusion and no Due Process available within RARA, the RARF and the AAWC, to challenge such a fraudulent document.

Please be advised that First Amendment Protected Journalists are not admonished by Mobsters such as Michael J. Houghton and his thugs at RARA to do "anything" in general, and in particular, we are not admonished to "not do our jobs" when it comes to exposing criminal acts involving Conspiracy and Racketeering.

I am now concerned that because of this "Phantom contract" that up until now, I was previously unaware of, and since this contract tends to undermine the testimony of a former Reno Deputy Police Chief and then Acting Police Chief (Temporary) as perjury, I am very, VERY (emphasis, not screaming, the latter a violation of "netiquette") interested in the details or in particular, the "Terms & Conditions."

I see a major conflict of interest between the Reno P.D. and the Reno Air Racing Association, as well as the Reno Air Racing Foundation and the Airport Authority of Washoe County, in such a trade of "Security Services" for property lease. The crimes of Mike Houghton, the RARA and the AAWC, are well documented.

The rhetorical question is ~ and you can choose to answer this if you wish to ~ has the Mob in Reno just hired the Reno Police to serve as its Thugs and Enforcers?

...this is because the next questions out of my mouth will be the same one, only, the question will address the City of Reno, the City Attorney and the City Courts, including, but not limited to, Justice of the Peace, Small Claims (Case of Ray Sherwood vs Michael J. Houghton and RARA et al) and the Municipal Court?

Are they too, on the Mob payroll or having something to gain and benefit from contracts with RARA, AAWC and RARF?

I know that my readers would be very interested in having an answer to that question.
Final questions for you:

Are you familiar with and can you describe the terms "Pattern of Practice" and "Civil Rights Violations Under Color of Authority?" Are your Officers trained in avoidance of these issues?

That is pretty much the extent of my questons based on your rather excellent response. Your time and attention to these questions is very much appreciated. I am encouraged by your straightforward honest replies so far.

In regards to "returning" after being admonished to stay off Stead Airport, there was some confusion on the part of the Police Chief, based on the explanation he was given in regards to what he knew of my arrest.

The "Notice to Exclude" was issued prior to my going on Stead Airport therefore, there was no "return" per say, other than, RARA and their AAWC friends were challenged a second time since my first arrest on September 14, 2004, as to this bogus, groundless "Notice to Exclude," that was issued on behalf of RARA by the Law Firm they share jointly with the RARF ~ the Jones Vargas Law Firm, as headed by State Senator William J. "The Kingpin" Raggio, Father of the AAWC and whose Law Firm lobbies him and others in the Nevada Sentate.

However, the "Notice to Exclude" actually occurred immediately following the posting of my Red Bull Air Racing coverage, which I believe was the catalyst to cause RARA to remember the Law Firm hadn't issued me their annual "Notice to Exclude," thus a rush to have it hand delivered to my home address here in the downtown Reno area. That hand delivery was followed by a Certified Mailing received here at my home address, while I was out, by Jeremy and/or Ali Boswell.

There were only three days notice an no time to prepare an Emergency Injunction. RARA was informed at the Stead Airport event site in 2008 that I would be challenging them again in 2009. Michael J. Houghton and Steve Silva were the individuals receiving that notification.

They were left alone in 2008 based on the verbal condition they not issue any "Wanted: Dead or Alive Posters" on my photographers as they had issued on me approximately two years earlier.

Please note that the above e-mail exchange has been diseminated to others and will continue to be, even after the arraignment on August 6, 2009, as an additional, Major Civil Rights case against the City and the Reno P.D. has been given foundation by the Chief of Police for Reno, Nevada.

The Editor is currently in contact with the Reporter's Committee in regards to these ongoing Civil Rights and First Amendement issues, has been in prior contact with Reporters Without Borders, of which the Editor is a member and sponsor, and will shortly be in contact with the Committee of Concerned Journalists, of which the Editor is also a member, along with a selection of News publications around the Globe.

In the meantime, Civil Rights in Reno are effectively at an end as there is no "Equal Justice, Equal Protection Under the Law" when the Law serves Corporate Organized (White Collar) Crime Interests and effects False Arrests on behalf of the same.

Likewise, "Ask The Reno P.D." just became ineffective in that, Freedom of Information just went out the window, as does a person's First Amendment Protect Right to "Petition the Government for a Redress of Grievances," when that very same Government ~ as reflected by the City of Reno and the Reno P.D. at this critical moment in time ~ serves "The Mob," not the People, and receives tangible financial perks and benefits as a direct result of betraying you, "The People!"

Using False Allegations and False Arrest, along with Malicious Prosecution and Fraudulent Conviction, to silence "Your Press" ~ the ones with the responsibility to the "Public's Right to Know" and to keep you informed ~ are not in your best interests.

Particularly, when these techniques once successful against the Press, can then be turned on you, "The People."

P.S. I just found where the Police Chief acknowledges: "...were arrested by our officer for misdemeanor Trespass in facilitation of a citizens arrest by airport personnel." That was a very important piece of information I needed. Sitting there right in front of me. Unfortunately, the Conflict of Interest again and contradicting statements. They're paid via a lease agreement ~ which contains financial value in regards to having land available on which they have a hangar ~ to provide "Law Enforcement Services." However, if the land were in the City of Reno, they cannot charge for that service. Even if the land isn't in the City of Reno, or controlled by the same, they cannot charge for Private Security Services that conflict with their duties as Law Enforcement Officers.

They themselves may have to arrest the people whom they have a lease with. Instead, they do the bidding of criminals and the innocent are arrested by the Reno P.D. without consideration of the merit of the charges... "Misdemeanor Trespass on a Public Airport by a 503 Non Profit organization of a First Amendment protected Journalist."

Oh well. This is defintely going to a Federal Court now. But at least I found that section where they acknowledge "Citizen's Arrest." And in that regard, the "Citizen's Arrest" was not done properly. That becomes an issue.

At the foot of the Tehachipi Mountains, not far from Edwards Air Force Base, sits the old west town of Mojave, California.

The pioneer spirit once dwelled in this community, which marked the end of the trail for the famed, "Twenty-Mule-Teams," pulling their long wagon trains across the Mojave Desert from the mining town of Borax, California....

Today, pioneers still exist here.

Mojave is home to the only Civilian Flight Test Center in the world, and birthplace of the elegant "Voyager" aircraft, which flew around the world non-stop without refueling.

For a brief decade, Mojave was also home to "The World's Fastest Motorsport," Air Racing.

Air Racing began in Rheims, France, in August of 1909, long before coming to Mojave in 1970.

Air Racing is what brought me to Mojave in 1979, on the 70th Anniversary of the birth of this great sport. In the first week of June, Mojave was scheduled to host an event known as a closed-course, "Pylon" Air Race.

I arrived at the "California National Air Races" of 1979 working as a "stringer "--or "free-lance photojournalist--with the Los Angeles office of United Press International (UPI).

In covering the Air Races, my goal was to do what was then, only a dream amongst photographers such as myself--to ride in a high-performance racing plane during an actual "heat race." The ultimate goal: to obtain air-to-air photography of a heat race in progress--from the pilot's perspective--something the general public had yet to see in widespread print media.

This was a dangerous piece of risk-taking that needed official sanction before it would occur. Such sanction would have to come from officials in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the California National Air Races (CNAR) "Air Race Management" organization, and from the one pilot who would be willing to take me along on "The Ride."

Mind you, I wasn't born unto taking risks. Risk-taking was something that I had learned over a period of time. I'm not one to gamble with my life nor take great physical risks, unless there is some greater benefit to be had.

However, Aviation had long been a love of mine, and the temptation of riding in an Unlimited Class racing plane proved too great. I believed that the odds of making it through a race safely were in my favor.

Having spent the earlier part of the week obtaining my press credentials from CNAR, I actually found my ride before I had official permission from the FAA to take it. My benefactor was John Putman, pilot of a true contender--an old fighter plane known as the North American P-51D Mustang, previously converted to racing through airframe and engine modifications.

Approval of the FAA, the greatest obstacle to be surpassed, luckily fell into my lap, purely as a result of being in the right place at the right time.

A management change at the local field office resulted in my receiving the approval of the new leadership--something I was assured by the old leadership I would not have gotten from the latter, primarily due to the extreme dangers that exist in the sport. In fact, Air Racing has since been classified as an "Extreme Sport."

Approval was mine though, and all I had to do was find a "seatpack parachute." Luck was with me, as I chose the right man at the right time--a pilot between races. I had my parachute, just as the flight was to begin.

John's "competition:"

...the Red Baron Air Racing Team and their pilot, Steve Hinton--at 26 years of age, the youngest pilot in the history of the Unlimited Class.

The Red Baron Team had arrived at Mojave ready to race, with their highly-modified, radical racing design, the famed "RB-51 Mustang" known as the "Red Baron," Race 5. Beating that 500 mile-per-hour, Rolls Royce Griffon-powered thoroughbred would prove a considerable task--not that challengers were lacking.

Endeavoring to win a Championship for themselves, several racers potentially stood in Steve's way, including John Putman and Race 86, known as "Ciuchetton" (or "Chooch-ah-toon").

Unfortunately for John and the "Banducci Air Racing Team," the Rolls Royce Merlin engine in "Ciuchetton" had begun shedding metals into her filters, and it was only a matter of time before the engine would have to go in for overhaul.

As a result, "Ciuchetton" could not compete at the RB-51's higher speeds.

Thus, another situation outside of my control found me once again thrust into the right place at the right time. When I approached him for a ride, John indicated he could take me into competition, since he now had to reduce power and slow down for the remainder of the races...

Everything was falling into place, but too easily it seemed. --"Would the race be this easy?"-- I was about to find out.

John and I took off from Mojave Airport and headed out over the Mojave Desert. Once airborne, we soon found ourselves in the company of Robert A. "Bob" Hoover, wingman for Chuck Yeager's history-making flight through the Sound Barrier in October, 1947. Several racing planes were already joined up on his wing. Hoover traditionally flew the "Pace Plane" for the racers, gathering them into formation before leading them onto the course in an aerial, "Race Horse Start."

Seven pilots and their aircraft would be competing in our heat. Among them:

Steve Hinton, who was in the "pole position" of Bob's left wing. Steve had recently equaled an Air Racing record by winning his third individual Championship event within the period of a year. He was on a pace to set a new record with a fourth Championship win, if he finished first in Sunday's Unlimited Gold Race.

Waldo "Clay" Klabo, who had excelled in competition while flying an unmodified, stock P-51D racer, was just off Steve's wing in 2nd position.

The late John Crocker, a World Airways DC-10 pilot, was flying his hybrid P-51D "Sumthin' Else" in 3rd position.

John and I were fourth in "Ciuchetton."

Dan Martin and his immaculately restored, stock P-51D Mustang, "Ridge Runner III," were likely sitting in fifth position. I didn't see them nor even know they were in the race at that moment.

Pan Am 747 pilot Lloyd Hamilton and his Korean War-era Hawker Sea Fury were in sixth position, off Dan's wing.

Seventh was truly "Tail-end Charlie," in that "Charlie" Beck was at the controls of the famed "Miss America" racer, a hybrid P-51D Mustang whose affable pilot--Howie Keefe--was ailing. Unfortunately for Charlie, "Miss America was ailing as well.

As a group, Hoover directed us to an adequate starting speed, then we dove on the course like a flight of eagles launching after the same prey.

As heat poured into the cockpit, the first critical moment of the race was about to come. All aircraft would begin the course at the "Scatter Pylon," an aircraft-separation marker developed to prevent mid-air collisions at the start of every race.

(A "Scatter" is also used for lighter aircraft, like the Formula Ones and Sport Biplanes, when a "windshift" requires they takeoff in the opposite of course direction. At Reno, Inner Pylon 5 was so designated.)

Thousands of cheering spectators were on their feet in the grandstands as our flight came down the homestretch and across the starting line. Steve and the RB-51 were already pulling away...

I had the RB-51 in my viewfinder before we reached that first pylon, but in that moment, Steve simply "poured on the coal" and just "walked away!" I was totally prepared to take the shot, but things happened so quickly, I never got the shot off.

Having filled my viewfinder a fraction of a second earlier, the RB-51 was suddenly gone and the shot was missed. I took two shots from a distance, and never saw the aircraft again--at least, not until after we had landed.

I located several racers banking into the turn and struggled against the g-forces (1) to position and focus my camera on them. From altitude, I managed several shots of those racers beneath us, during our transition from the "Scatter" to the other pylons marking the back course.

As John descended on the course, I found that we were positioned side-by-side with Dan Martin in "Ridge Runner III," our two aircraft competing for an undeterminable position.

This was the first moment I knew that Dan was physically in the race.

Steve, Clay and Crocker were well ahead of us, while Hamilton and Beck were positioned behind.

Within the cockpit of an Unlimited Class air racer, there is a sense of speed and motion that is unusual, if not rare and unique. One just seems to glide over the terrain, like a falcon patrolling it's territory. Through the Plexiglas-bubble canopy, your view of the desert landscape is peppered by patches of sagebrush and creosote, along with the occasional pylon standing as a marker on the course.

Life exists "out there," but traveling at 400 miles per hour, you're not really aware of it.

No, life only exists in your cockpit, while everything around you is beautifully surreal. The feeling is exhilarating, even as you sweat and work away at the camera from within a very confined space.

In the moments that I had Dan and his racer in my viewfinder, spatial disorientation occurred (2), adding an abstract effect to an already "Calderesque" scene.

"Ridge Runner III," like "Ciuchetton," was a silvery, low-winged, single-engine racer, with a sleek fuselage topped by a bubble canopy, in turn, balanced by an airscoop fitted beneath wing and fuselage. Her helmeted pilot seated within that canopy, "Ridge Runner III's" four-bladed propeller whirled away, cutting into the sky while pulling this elegant mount and its "jockey" along. On the side of the engine cover, a painted "nose art" depicting the original aircraft's combat record, topped with an ungainly, tusked, "Arkansas Razorback" (a species of boar), represented in the inevitable, angry "Charge!"

Suspended against the desert landscape like an artistic piece on a mobile, pilot and racing plane seemed to dive at the terrain one moment, then in the next, furiously climb near-vertical against the blue Mojave sky. Both pilot and aircraft were operating at the "max" --not so much "flying and competing," but rather--from my perspective--"fighting and holding on" against some invisible force that was out there, seeking to thwart their quest. Pylons were "Windmills," and here was Martin in the midst of a Quixotic joust! All the time, I am watching... I remember it well!

...Dan's P-51 racing over the Mojave landscape beneath us; John and I keeping pace with him in another P-51; Dan staying just ahead of us, low to the ground and to our right.

We started gaining on "Ridge Runner III," and closed directly over Dan in a vertical, wingtip-to-wingtip duel.

Several miles away, the perspective for others was far different than mine. The crowd watched as an aerial ballet took place between our racers. Now, both aircraft were low above the desert floor, the pylons more defined as we roared by each.

At 400 miles per hour, a wing-strike with a pylon--essentially a telephone pole topped by a 55-gallon oil drum--would be lethal. There was no room for mistakes, and Dan was closer to the pylons than us!

As we banked hard into another turn, Dan's aircraft seemed to drift upwards towards us.Again, we were instantly wingtip-to-wingtip with him. For a moment, it even appeared as though we were going to collide.

My seatpack chute beneath me was at the ready. John had Dan in sight. There was nothing I could do--there as an observer--a mere passenger in the seat behind John. Dan's P-51 veered closer and appeared to be sliding upwards. All that was left for me was to shoot pictures, since that's what I was there for.

Our proximity to Dan was no longer relevant to my mission.

Knowing prior to the flight that what was about to occur had been a possibility all along, I now had to face a real danger, still keep the camera working, and think no more about it.

I was UPI's representative seated in the middle of a dangerous event. I was finally, a photojournalist operating in his element.

Then things got worse.

Suddenly, Dan's P-51 seemed to shoot up off the course at us! Instinctively, I lowered my camera to watch, not so much fearful as surprised. Also instinctively, I clicked the shutter and took a shot as I did...

A fraction of a second passes rapidly. A fraction of a second doesn't give one enough time to sit and watch his trivial life "pass before his eyes." Nor, does it really even give one time enough to die. That's how close the three of us were about to come to death...

...a mere fraction of a second in time.

Lady Luck would either watch over us very carefully, or scatter us to the four winds!
This time, she was watching.

I say to myself, "Man! That was close! Dan must have had trouble and pulled out."

Then it's John and I in "Ciuchetton," seemingly alone on the course, though there's a race underway and other aircraft out there.

Though the engine's running at high speed, and heat continues to poor into the cockpit, making the environment around us seem like a sauna; there is a silence and a stillness within as I photograph the pylons and their crews, hoping for more racing aircraft to photograph.

Sitting there, I could tell the race was about to end.

In my headset, I hear two "Maydays." "Miss America's" engine has unraveled, and the other unidentified aircraft is a precautionary. In the Pace Plane overhead, Hoover diverts to assist the pilots.

Both aircraft make it down safely.

Then comes the announcement, "The race is over! The race is over!" John climbs for altitude and sets up for landing. I look at the grandstands as we pass and they are near empty. We were the last race of the day.

Steve won the race, then went on to win his fourth consecutive Championship within the period of a year--a new record which stands to this day, some twenty years later.

I shot one roll of black and white film, and another roll of color. I came away with very little. The shot I missed--of the RB-51 at the beginning of the race, would probably have been the one utilized.

The shots of Dan don't give the "human perspective" of a sense of "what is going on" event-wise. None of the shots were utilized by UPI. Just the same, four other shots are published by their L.A. office "over the wire," including a fine shot taken during practice laps of the late Ralph Twombly flying his SNJ Trainer.

In that wirephoto, Ralph is between myself and Outer Pylon Six at Mojave, and I'm focusing down on both. Risk to me during the practice laps was minimal.

Was the risk worth it--ignoring the dangers--to take a few photos that ultimately, never get published?

Sometimes, the odds are neither with you nor against you. One takes a risk, they stand a chance of losing. One breaks even, they get handed another chance. I don't recommend gambling--throwing one's money or their life away--but I do recommend taking risks in life.

In the end--John, Dan and I, broke even and walked away. All three of us live to race another day. John and Dan still have the opportunity before them to become "Champions."

I live to risk again and "get that photograph!" If I ever do race again my hope is that Lady Luck is always watching over me... ....and never once, turns her head. (3)

Notes:

(1) One "g" = one times the weight of gravity. Air Racers can pull between six and nine or more "g's" during a race, in a "positive" (force applied) or negative (force denied or weightlessness) direction. At nine "g's," and without a pressure suit, a pilot can begin to "gray out" when the blood in his head is forced to his feet in a positive g. In a negative g, the blood can rush to his head, causing him to begin to "red out."

(2) Another issue with "Spatial Disorientation" is "Who is doing what..." Dan hadn't drifted up towards us, rather--we had drifted down on him! In reviewing the photos afterwards, not only is Dan's aircraft closer to us (thus the effect of him drifting upwards), so too is the ground (the ground is not supposed to do that...heh...heh...) Though Dan was upset about it afterwards, he was the consummate gentleman. While waiting to speak with John, I mentioned our close call and how I had been taking pictures--and it was "just like Christmas..."--Dan looked at me, gave me that look of a kid with a new bike, and said: "Can I have a copy!?" Dan Martin is a frequent visitor to the Air Races, and the Annual "Warbird Roundup," held in Santa Maria, California, one hour north of Santa Barbara. Santa Maria show information is available through the Santa Maria Museum of Flight in the U.S. 805 area code, or the City of Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce.

(3) For what it's worth--I spoke after the race with Steve Galvin, CNAR's Official Event Photographer, who was unaware that I had completed my coordination's--let alone--been up in the race and was back again. Steve got with Scott Rayburn, who was a long-time Press Coordinator, and both only recalled one other photographer ever going up in an air race with official sanction. "Unofficially," they indicated, "this makes you the second photographer in the history of the sport to fly in a racer during a race."

A Civil Rights Conundrum

Musing today over the issue of Civil Rights.

If Equal Protection Under the Law applies to Americans, does it also apply Globally?

Must the United States treat all citizens of the World at a minimum, in the exact same manner that it must ~ by Law ~ treat its own citizens?

In setting a Standard of Law, should the United States by International Law, be required to maintain that standard with regards to Equality among all, as proof that the United States believes in its own standard of Justice and is applying the same to its own citizens?

In that event, based on the United States ratifying Civil and Human Rights for all, if the United States treats others as it treats the citizenship here in the U.S., then the Civil and Human Rights of all should improve proportionally and the Standard of Law for Americans would accordingly, be considered "Maintained" at that high standard.

For why would the United States not treat others as well as it treats its own citizenry, and vice versa?

If the United States fails to treat others Globally as it treats the citizenship here in the U.S., then one must believe that the United States is not treating its own People properly under the U.S. Standard of Law, and that U.S. Citizens suffer at the hands of the United States Government in the same manner that citizens overseas suffer from its alleged crimes and misconduct.

Meaning, that if citizens of other nations overseas suffer Civil and Human Rights violations at the hands of the United States, then it's likely that U.S. Citizens are suffering the same treatment in one form or another, from their own Government.

And this would include "Torture," and I'm not just talking about "Waterboarding" or other evils this Government has perpetrated against Foreign Citizens, in hypocritical contrast to what this Government espouses in terms of Civil Rights, Civil Liberties and Human Rights.

I'm talking about the many ways the United States Government has of destroying Human Lives, especially those it destroys here in the United States in terms of False Allegations, Malicious Prosecution and Fraudulent conviction ~ to end result in False Imprisonment and the confiscation falsely, of Civil and Human Rights via incarceration in places like Guantanomo Bay, Cuba, "Flo-Max," in Florence, Colorado, U.S.A., and on average, in every Federal Penitentiary across the land.

Citizens Foreign and Domestic falsely accused of being Enemies Foreign and Domestic, and treated inappropriately as a result, with Mass Communications of the Government's spin against these people used to influence The People against them, whether the Government is putting out the Truth or not. Innocent men and women have been known to plea bargain out of fear of the "Worst" which they are always threatened with, even though they haven't committed a crime and a plea bargain ultimately doesn't represent proof that they committed a crime at all or a crime worthy of suppression and oppression by the United States Goverment.

Only the hard evidence does, and a lazy Government wishing to avoid the expense and the work, offers threats and plea bargains in place of a Work and a Legal ethic.

Otherwise, and rather clearly, it's fair to say that the United States is operating under a double standard; that it professes one standard publicly of Civil Rights, Civil Liberties, Freedoms and Human Rights; and that it applies a second Standard hidden behind the facade of the Standard that came first, and then allows State and Local Governments to do the same, while it turns its head away from State and Local Government Crimes and Civil Rights violations, to focus on conducting more of its own.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," is a biblical expression of fairness and justice, upon which the United States is founded. And yet, daily, Civil and Human Rights are violated here in the United States and these violations no longer know boundaries of color, religion, sex, class, status, etc.

As Jesse Jackson once said (paraphrasing): It matters not what boat you came to the United States on, for "we're all in the same boat now."

Or, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: "What they do to one of us, they do to all of us." And throughout history, that thought, that sentence, has been repeated before, based on Humanism ~ that what was true yesterday about Human interaction, remains true today in terms of Human interaction ~ and it must be pointed out that a "Modern" Civilization based on and derived from Antiquity ~ unable to separate from the past, remaining on a single path, with other paths out there yet waiting to be taken ~ will remain Obsolete and incapable of advancing or progressing to greater Freedoms, but rather, regresses away from the same.

Humanism equates and exists upon the Antiquity that represents Human Times and action by Human Kind. Humanism therefore equates to the term "All Known" ~ and frankly ~ "All Unknown" Human History, but most importantly, all "Known" Human History.

Is it not amazing that a Human Being can build a computer, which could and frankly has advanced the Human Cause magnificently, but the Human Being cannot capitalize on such advancement further, or on the greater advancements that could be achieved through leaps and bounds towards progress? And all because Mankind is Human, and Humanism has Mankind regressing away from future, via repeating "past mistakes" (War, for example)?

...rather than Man putting his past behind him, taking greater risks at higher speeds, and riding that computer at a dizzying pace into a new future, one the Human Kind can only imagine of thanks to the computer and Slothful Man's invention of the same!?

Why build a tool if you're not going to use it properly, to its full extent and range of use?

Such is man. He's slow. Hasn't figured that one out yet!

Man, in fact, is slower than "slow." He builds fast machines which he is incapable of driving as a result of his slothful ways. Takes a computer to guide the Space Shuttle in during re-entry from Space, because's Man's Eye, Hand and Mind coordination, cannot react quickly enough to any threat that exists between Space and the Landing site. The Space Shuttle re-enters at 24,000 mph. Twenty Four Thousand Miles Per Hour.

Man builds fast machines, but due to Slothful Humanism, he can't operate his technology without help from the technology itself.

The same is true of Man's collective Life.

To put it bluntly, Civil and Human Rights are declining in the United States because of Corporate influence over Goverment and politicians. That and the fact that some men are too slow to figure out what other men have "going on," particularly in terms of scams, schemes, fraud, flim flam and Con-artistry. Corporations operate on the basis of the "hand being quicker than the eye," and just how fast you can conceal what you're doing, or explain it away, from Slothful Men. The men and women running such Corporations are not much faster themselves, but they don't have to be, as long as they're faster than and a jump ahead of "Slothful Man." They get away with the misconduct they pull by merely staying a jump ahead of the slower guy.

As embodied by the expression: "You snooze, you lose!"

Corporations are a major portion of the funding and propaganda of this two Party system. Humanism and our "predictabilty" as Human Beings, plays right into the hands of Corporate interests.

Where have Civil Rights, Civil Liberities, Human Rights, the Law, gotten us since 1776?

Is this nation advancing or declining on the issues of Civil Rights, Human Rights, Equal Justice and Equal protection under the Law? And is technological advancement by Human Beings in America causing us to advance or decline more than simple logic, common sense and reasoning, might provide in the way of Progress?

These are questions needing to be raised and answered.

As for the answer here, as long as all men are NOT equal, despite the poetic-romatic-nonsense applied to their Creation, Civil Rights, Human Rights and Equal Justice, along with and in particular, the Failure of the Same, will always exist as issues in dispute, while oppression and suppression continue their march against all Humanity, not just against the citizens of the United States of America.

Convoluted Systems of Justice which make the victim the criminal, and the criminal the victim, are not advancing our cause and in fact, are causing our decline.

All Citizens of the World are affected by these simple issues and All Citizens of the World are eventually and ultimately affected by what goes on specifically here in the United States, and whether or not American Citizens receive Equal Protection and Equal Justice under U.S. Law, as citizens here are alleged to receive, but in fact, do not and likely, never will.

If the United States believes in its Laws, why are those Laws not applied equally overseas, upping the Standards of Justice and Equality elsewhere by simple, evenhanded application of U.S. Law by the U.S. Government to citizens overseas, whether or not Governments overseas truly want their People to have that much Freedom?

The simple Truth is: the Government of the United States is a fraud which does not treat its own Citizens in accordance with its own Standards, and allows Corporations and "Those With Money" the "Right" to enslave U.S. Citizens and control their thoughts, beliefs and actions, through Mass Communications. Corporations are in control of the U.S. Government, its Politicians and the People, and Corporations have ulterior motives that hide behind three pieces of paper conspicuously displayed in the National Archives, in Washington, D.C., but none the less, hidden behind glass that distorts and protected by armed men controlled by Corporations and their lap dog Political friends, the former, whom strangely enough, are this nation's "Elected Representatives," and the latter whom are, represent "dogs that bite" the collective hand that truly feeds them, not the Corporations.

As if anyone really has a choice as to whom they elect, since they cannot control whom is allowed to run for Office, be heard during his or her campaign, and placed on level ground through appropriately and perpetually reformed, Campaign funding Laws and Measures.

Even the News Media are Corporate and what benefits one Corporation tends to benefit all, especially in regards to unevenhanded and Unconstitutional treatment of American Citizens and American workforce. They have the money, the power, the ability and the support, as Corporations under U.S. Law, to do whatever they want to whomever they want, until such time as they get caught or America rises up against them all and "takes down the beast."

Otherwise, like Will Rogers, one only knows what they "read in the paper," and thus the issue goes back to Corporate Media feeding the Masses pabulum.

The problem is, many Americans believing these Corporate types, their Spin Masters and their media outlets ~ as controlled by money via "Advertising" payments ~ are listening to stories such as "We're the greatest nation on earth (!)."

Americans come to believe this Big Lie, without regards to the Great nations, including those responsible for our founding, that have been around longer than 200+ years. Americans are furthermore, without regard to developing, up and coming Third World Nations, and as long as people are fat, dumb and happy on pabulum that feeds them the thought, the idea, that "Hey, you're the greatest (!)," the Average American could care less about, nor do they really know, what goes on in the rest of the World, unless Corporate Media tells them, and in that regard, Corporate Media feeds them heaping bowls of mushy pabulum and will only tell the American Masses just what Corporate Media wants them to know.

Frankly, we haven't reached our third Century as a nation and our brains are already fried on pabulum.

Politicians figure into all this not as "Elected Representatives," but newscasters for what Corporate Media wants the Public told.

Our nation is not represented in Congress or the Senate by the enlightened "Elected Representative..."

...our nation is run by "Weathergirls." Plain and simple. Apologies to Sarah Palin of a sort, because she legitimately worked as a "Weathergirl" before going into Politics, and I'm referring primarily about those "who didn't!" Which I guess makes Sarah Palin more experienced than anyone in American Politics to be an American Politician, meaning, it was she, not John McCain, who should have run for President.

Meaning even further that ~ "as is tradition" in televised newscasting ~ the State of the Union Address like the "Weather," is always broadcast before the Sports. They won't "stay tuned" for the boring after the exciting, so you give them the State of the Union and the Weather(girls) first, then conclude your broadcast with some excitement ~ The Sports!

The People, their minds already filled (actually, "oversaturated") with pabulum, are more concerned with "How about them Dodgers" than they are their own Government and those whom are running it. You never here them say, "How about them Politicians!?" That's the difference between a "Brooklyn Bum" and a "Politican."

One is a figure of speech, meant to be complimentary; the other's a Bum making speeches containing facetious compliments.

And we elect these "Pretty-haired" "Weathergirl reporters" not on merit or ability, but rather, like we would our fellow students in a School Student Body election, as based on "popularity" and for what job?

At least the Dodgers are chosen and paid on their ability to hit the ball out of the park, or just to get hits at all without striking out.

As many Republican politicans appear to be doing (the latter) in regards to Sex and Politics in the State of Nevada.

As for Student Bodies at campuses across this nation and overseas, these students are not elected to run the school. There are already people hired to do that. So get a clue. You can elect all the Politicians you want, but there are already people paid to run the Government, and they exist in the Corporate Boardroom, not the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., or anywhere else for that matter. Americans may as well be getting their leadership from a Clerk operating a Slurpee Machine in a 7-11 store that looks like the Taj Mahal.

In fact, that choice might actually be better.

There are only ghosts in the Lincoln Bedroom. Ghosts of Dreams detailing what we could have been, as opposed to what we are today. Class struggle in what was originally intended to be a Classless Society, until one-man, one-vote became an impossibility ~ something that was possible, only the wealthy could not stand for it, and "Elected Representatives" and a "Limited Democracy" were the end result of an "imposed compromise" in its most Oxymoronic form.

In real life, the people running the United States are all Corporate, not Congressman or Senators, who rely on Corporate funding to get elected, then having received such funding, are required to do what they are told or they will not be around after the next Corporate-controlled election.

They may be manifested in Presidents, CEOs, Attorneys, Board of Directors, Judges, Politicians, Newscasters, Broadcasters and the like, but they are Corporate and that fact determines what their job is.

And what the hell is their job?

Simply put: they swear to uphold the Laws and Constitution of the United States. That is their job. What do they do with that job? They turn around and fail their responsibilities miserably and with Malice Aforethought, with ulterior motive ~ greed being that motive ~ and work using the Law to turn around and enslave you and I.

The "Powers That Be" don't like what you have to say ~ they can destroy you over it. Even if you're in the right. They're the ones with the money and the power, nine times out of ten over you.

Money and Knowledge of Law are power. So too, are Mass Communications.

They remember Machiavelli and his "expedience" first, and apply those lessons, while preaching secondarily of Sir Thomas Moore and his "Utopia," wherein "Great Power comes with Great Responsibility."

Who wins, who loses, when they put Machiavelli first, let alone, let him have a voice at all? Even the Prince he was advising "way back when" rejected his advice. The People of Italy were appalled. That's right. Machiavelli was Italian and living under Royalty, not an American trying to build a Democracy.

And yet today, along with Adolf Hitler's Big Lie, Machiavelli is central to American Corporate Business Interests and Operations, without regard to U.S. Civil Rights, U.S. Civil Liberties, and U.N. Declared Human Rights, and all because of expedience, which Machiavelli of course, was a proponent of. Torture was easy; Diplomacy was hard.

Take the Low Road over the High...and even charge a Toll!

Musing today about Civil Rights, Human Rights, U.S. Law, and the failures of the three despite the existence of U.S. Government to defend those Rights and Laws. Musing about the fact that there is more substance to a Disney Movie Musical than there is to the song and dance represented by the State of the Union Address, as deivered by no less than the President.

And ABC TV broadcasts both ~ AND the Wide World of Sports! And often times, in that order!

Musing while remembering of course, that Thomas Jefferson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, which started the American Revolution, and whom later became President of the United States, indicated that America should have more Revolutions more often.

How very fascinating coming from one of our Elected Representatives, whom by no mere coincidence, was also a Slave Owner at the time of and long after he signed his name to Civil Rights, Civil Libeties and the Cause of Freedom not only here in the United States, but as a Dream he hoped would sweep the World.

Jefferson couldn't even sweep his Slave Quarters with that Dream, Sports Fans...

...and that's because, if Jefferson were alive today, he'd be a Corporation. So too, would all the Founding Fathers be.

Especially George Washington, who offered to command our Revolutionary Army, if the U.S. Congress would merely cover his expenses.
